Hurricane Stan

In early October Hurricane Stan battered the highlands of Guatemala, causing landslides and destroying the maize and potato crop. Over 1,000 people died in the disaster and over 3,000 were declared missing.

AMURT and AMURTEL teams are assisting the Mayan population affected by the hurricane in Solola municipality, We have assisted over 500 families in the mountain villages of Sanat Catarina Palopo and Panajachel, providing them with food parcels that include rice, oil, beans, tortilla flour, oatmeal and a local healthy drink called incaparina. We have also distributed drinking water.

First we approach the Mayan leaders to find the names of the displaced families, and then we call them to a central distribution point. The Mayan Indians are extremely grateful to receive the food, as many have lost their homes and their crops.

We are now assessing the needs of 30 villages in another sub-district of Aceh Besar with a view to distributing hygiene kits and kitchen utensils.

Meanwhile AMURTEL has been concentrating on providing livelihood opportunities for women tsunami victims through its sewing machine program. They distributed 50 sewing machines donated by the International Federation of the Red Cross (IFRC) benefiting 50 women in 2 barrack settlements. These women have agreed to make 1000 school uniforms in exchange for their sewing machines. Another 30 women have almost completed their second quota of 600 school uniforms with the sewing machines they had received earlier from AMURTEL. The sewing machine project will now expand into a third barrack involving another 20 women through donation obtained from Sun newspaper in Malaysia.
