LEBANON war reliefAMURT & AMURTEL have already started providing
medical support for internally-displaced refugees housed in government schools
in and around Beirut. We are using homeopathic remedies to treat primarily
stress-related illnesses. AMURT has been active in Beirut for over a year
already, running a homeopathic clinic in the Shatila refugee camp for
Palestinians in the Lebanese capital.
Since the war started we have added an an out reach program to the government
schools where refugees have taken shelter.

AMURT and AMURTEL volunteers dispense homeopathic
remedies to Palestinian refugees in Beirut
Our team is also ready to provide food to the
refugees, but it requires more support for that. We are soliciting donations for
their work.

INDONESIA Java earthquake and tsunami relief
Pangandaran
Earthquake/Tsunami
Following the 6.8 level earthquake and the ensuing 3 meter high tsunami
that struck western Java island in Indonesia on July 17th, AMURT and AMURTEL
sent a team on July 20th to provide emergency relief. Already 618 people have
died and over 50,000 people are homeless. So far we distributed relief packets
to 437 families (1447 people) in Legok and Batu Malang villages of Ciamis
District. Our relief packets consists of clothing, food, toiletries and
medicine.
Kitchen/Hygiene Kits
Distribution
We completed the distribution of another 530 kitchen/hygiene kits on
July 11 bringing a total of 1050 kits distributed thus far from the funds
received from the German NGO Kinder Not Hilfe (KNH). We plan to finish the fund
allocation for this project with another small distribution as soon as the
balance of the funds arrive. The second round of distributions were performed in
three villages of Bantul district.

Temporary School Package
We could conduct the opening of our four new temporary schools on the
first day of the school year July 17. Two of the schools were completely
finished and the other two were completed enough that the children could begin
their studies there.
We also began the implementation of the trauma healing program in all four
schools on July 18th. Our ten volunteers completed their twelve day training on
July 12th and the training of teachers from the targeted schools was completed
on July 16th.
As for the provision of school
materials we could provide the schools with the most important item, i.e. desks
and chairs according to their request. The other school materials are in the
process of being purchased and we plan to distribute these items after one week.
We have gone ahead to increase the number of schools that will receive the
assistance package after discovering that the costs are lower than we had
initially anticipated. We plan to provide our temporary school package (i.e.
temporary school made from bamboo and local materials) teaching and learning
materials and psycho-social program for children for an additional six schools
making a total of ten schools that will benefit from this program. The areas
covered will be Yogyakarta city, Bantul District and Sleman District.
There is no uniform size for each school due to the limitation of available
space and the differing number of the student population in each school. The
Provincial Education Department requested all NGOs to provide at least 3
classrooms and one teachers room for each school. We have mostly exceeded this
target thus providing a better learning environment for more children. Needless
to say, the children are very pleased to be able to learn under the cooler
temporary school than the tents which most schools now have.

Students enjoying the new classrooms
In the first round of construction
we experimented with different contractors and designs. In the second round we
plan to select the best contractor and the best construction based on the
following criteria: Coolness of the building, Durability of the roof and
structure, Aesthetics, workmanship, Speed, Best Value for Money.
Our team consists of eight brothers and two sisters plus 15 student volunteers.
Sister Amrta of Malaysia joins us tomorrow for two months to assist with our
trauma healing program for the children.
We wish to thank all of the donors
in our that have helped us so far. We plan to continue this operation with His
Blessings for at least one year.
We are actively soliciting
