Kenya has long been a venue for many of AMURT’s service projects over the years, but new challenges continue to affect millions of residents. Education, healthcare, HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment, job creation, and care for orphans and vulnerable children have all been areas of emphasis and continue to be a large part of AMURT’s presence in Kenya.
2011 Drought
The most pressing and dangerous issue facing the people of Kenya is the 2011 drought, which was declared a national disaster by President Mwai Kibaki in April. Access to food and water has become very scarce, millions of livestock have died, and territorial violence has increased drastically as people compete for patches of fertile land. When nourishment can be found, heightened demand raises prices and makes staple goods difficult to obtain. On June 28th, the United Nations reported that 3.5 million people are in need of humanitarian relief.
Horn of Africa Disaster Response
Emergency food distribution, delivery of safe drinking water and medication is urgently needed in Kenya to prevent a wide scale of humanitarian catastrophe. HIV/AIDS Programs
HIV and AIDS have wreaked havoc on the Kenyan population, leaving those affected by the epidemic with little hope and millions more at risk of contracting the infection. AMURT’s initiatives harness the drive of community members to care for each other and educate others on HIV prevention.
