At a Red Cross shelter in a suburb of Baton Rouge one of our physicians examined and treated 25 patients. One of our volunteers who was helping him facilitated the reunion of a 17 year-old girl with her family, which was a joyous occasion for all.

In Houston one of our physicians there saw seven patients. Part of his day was taken up with participation an hour long radio program about AMURT’s work in Houston. KTFT radio asked one of our volunteers who is a local singer, guitarist and composer in Houston to perform in the program. Other volunteers talked enthusiastically about their work. It consisted of finding people in the shelter system who had fallen through the cracks. They helped them benefit fully from the system with our volunteers one on one guidance, care and support. They talked about children’s needs and how they addressed them. A local physician who had been working in the shelter heard the program and called in re-affirming their work and praising their proactive approach to service. Eight other people called in to volunteer to work with our Houston team.

In Austin, Texas the president of a local high school Key Club is an AMURT volunteer. She organized her club to raise funds for AMURT’s Katrina effort and to go to the local shelter and work with the evacuees.
