WEEKLY SUMMARY

Field operations:
We have now distributed a total of 1340 resettlement kits for tsunami victims in 5 spontaneous camps in Aceh Besar in coordination with Concern International worth a total value of $53,600.
AMURT Germany has requested 176 tons of food from the German Embassy who have a large allocation of food items for German NGO’s. Dada Dinakar has a monthly distribution plan for 7 villages in Aceh Besar to benefit 6730 tsunami victims. The German Ambassador was very impressed with AMURT’s quick response to their offer of food.
GTZ has verbally agreed to support the re-construction and repair of homes in Neuheun village worth a total value of 400,000 Euros. We should sign the MoU with GTZ for the repair of the Neuheun brick factories any day now whose value is now $176,000.
AMURT has committed to construct a temporary school of 6 classrooms in Klieng Meuria village, Aceh Besar Sub-District at a cost of $15,000.
The biggest insurance company in Germany, Allianz Germany has promised to sponsor one permanent school and one temporary school for AMURT. Dada Nirmalkrsnanandaji worked with Allianz Germany for 11 years in Greece!
Dada Pavanandaji and Shiilabhadrananda distributed recreations kits to 2290 tsunami children in 4 schools and 6 spontaneous camps in Aceh Barat District on the West Coast. So many schools were destroyed in Aceh Barat District, that the four schools were actually a combination of the surviving students from 15 schools of the District.
Didi Hema conducted Yoga class for 40 children in the TVRI camp and continued with her English classes for 65 children in two camps.

General Assessment:
Even though the relief operation has been underway for two months and the emergency is over, there are still gaps in the distribution of food in different places, while in other, more easily accessible camps, there is a surplus. AMURT is trying to address the problem of shortages especially with regard to food items so that all people have that basic commodity. It was seen on the West Coast that there is also a great need for assistance from NGO’s as many camps were without basic non-food items that we have been distributing through the resettlement kits. It appears that there is an even greater need for assistance in the West Coast than in Banda Aceh and Aceh Besar.
